"Bicycle Friendly Community"
Workshop set for May 8
Featuring Andy Clarke, League of American Bicyclists

Communities that are bicycle-friendly are seen as places with a high quality of life, which often results in increased property values, business growth and tourism. In bicycle-friendly communities, people feel safe and comfortable riding their bikes for fun, fitness, and transportation. And because more people are biking, traffic is reduced and air quality improved, not to mention the increase in physical fitness among the population

Currently, fewer than 100 communities across the country have earned one of four -- platinum, gold, silver, bronze -- Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) designations from the League of American Bibyclists.

The Dayton Region looks to become one of these elite communities. The first step will be the BFC workshop on Thursday, May 8, at the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission's Center for Regional Cooperation.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an option bike ride afterward. Andy Clarke, the President of The League of American Bicyclists, will conduct the workshop which will include a review of the BFC program, a review of local bicycling conditions/obstacles/opportunities, discussion of how to conduct "bikeability assessment" of the Miami Valley region, an action plan, and an optional ride (from 2 to 3 p.m.) to review current bicycling conditions (bring your own bike).

Space is limited for the workshop. To register, call Tashia Hunter at 937.223.6323 or online at www.mvrpc.org/rsvp by Thursday, May 1.
